Scoring outbursts leads baseball to sweep of Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks offense scored in bunches in both games of a doubleheader en route to a sweep by scores of 13-1 and 11-7 over Penn College of Technology in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action at Bowman Field. The Nittany Lions combined for nine runs in the final two innings of the opener and put up an 8-spot in the second inning of the nightcap.

The Nittany Lions (15-7, 5-1 NEAC) pounded out 15 hits - including three doubles - in game one and followed it up with 18 hits in the second game, while recording nine stolen bases in the two games combined.

Tom Grablewski played first base for the first time in his four-year career. The senior also made his collegiate pitching debut with two perfect innings secure the win in game two. Grablewski struck out the side (one looking) against the 4-5-6 hitters of the lineup in his first inning of work. He then set the bottom third of the lineup down in order with three routine ground outs to secure the win. At the plate, Grablewski combined to go 5-for-11 with five RBI, two runs scored, one double, and two stolen bases.

GAME 1
Sean Pavlik turned in a brilliant complete-game, 11-strikeout out performance in the opener. The sophomore right-hander scattered five hits, while allowing just one run to earn his conference leading fifth win of the season. Pavlik kept the Wildcats offense quiet early on and had one or fewer runners on base in seven of the nine innings.

The first batter he faced got on with a leadoff single, but was quickly erased from the base paths with a 5-4-3 double play. The only other time the Wildcats (10-15, 1-3 NEAC) got its leadoff base runner on was the fifth inning, when again Pavlik forced a 5-4-3 double play to the next batter.

Berks broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when Toby Welk and Zach Reis led off the inning with walks. Pearce Harhigh scored Welk with a one-out single down the left field line to give Berks the lead. They went ahead 4-0 after tacking on three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Reis drove in Welk and Luke Erb, who both walked earlier in the inning, with a two-out double to left center. John McGarvey then scored Reis with a single through the left side of the infield.

The Wildcats put up their lone run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 4-1 game. In the bottom of the seventh, Pavlik recorded two strikeouts in a shutdown inning and the offense followed with six runs in the top of the eighth to build a comfortable 10-1 lead. Pavlik worked around a double and hit batter in the eighth inning and followed with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure the win.

Grablewski went 3-for-6 with three RBI, while Reis finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks. Welk and Luke Erb each scored three times, with Welk also driving in three runs. Harhigh and Cory Fox both recorded two hits, while Dalton Hughes and Keeanu Erb each scored two times.

GAME 2
Grablewski got Berks on the board in the opening frame with an RBI single up the middle to score Harhigh, who led off the game with a single. After a 1-2-3 inning on defense, the Nittany Lions came to the plate with three straight singles by McGarvey, Max Edgin, and Fox. A wild pitch put in the first run of the inning and Harhigh knocked in two more with a double to right center. Luke Erb followed with an RBI single to score Keeanu Erb and Grablewski reached on an error by the pitcher to score Harhigh. Welk and McGarvey both had RBI singles in the inning and Edgin capped off the scoring by reaching on a fielder's choice.

The Wildcats came back strong from the 9-0 deficit by adding four runs in the second inning and another in the third to make it a 9-5 game. The teams exchanged a run over the next two innings to make it 11-7 heading into the top of the sixth.

Berks went down in order in the top of the sixth leading up to Grablewski making his mound debut. The senior right-hander fired fastball after fastball and sat cleanup hitter Cole Weahock, who homered earlier in the game, down swinging for out No. 1. He struck out the next batter on a check swing and finished it off by getting a strikeout looking to end the inning.

After the Nittany Lions offense got little generated in the top of the seventh, Grablewski went back out to work in the bottom half of the inning. The first pitch of the inning was a grounder to short that Keeanu Erb easily fielded and threw over to first. The next batter hit a slow chopper to short that Erb again fielded and tossed to first. Grablewski then got the final out of the game with a roller to Welk at third base.

Alex Doyle picked up his first win of the season with 3 1/3 innings of relief. He had three strikeouts, which matched his season-high recorded earlier in the week against Wilkes University.

Welk, Hughes, and Edgin all finished the game with three hits and a run scored, while Welk and Edgin also added an RBI each. Harhigh, Grablewski, and McGarvey each had two hits and at least one RBI and one run scored.

The Nittany Lions will head to New York for a NEAC doubleheader against Keuka College on Sunday, April 17 at 12 p.m.
