Welk's record setting performance highlights Wednesday sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Toby Welk turned in a record setting performance and the Penn State Berks baseball team was banging on all cylinders in its sweep over Swarthmore College, winning by scores of 11-3 and 23-8 on Wednesday afternoon in Myrtle Beach.

The Nittany Lions continued to their best start in program history to by improving to 6-1 in the early going. The offense has scored 10 or more runs in five contests and have already recorded 29 extra base hits, including 10 home runs. In the two games combined on Wednesday, PSB had three doubles, seven home runs, 16 walks, and three stolen bases. They only stranded four base runners in the opener and six game two.

In the second game, Welk went 4-for-4 with three home runs, 10 RBI, four runs scored, and a walk. The freshman infielder broke the single-game school record for homers and RBIs, while tying the program record for runs scored in a game. For the season, Welk is batting .563 (9-for-16) with a .625 on-base percentage and is slugging 1.313%.

Pearce Harhigh finished 2-for-3 two runs scored, a stolen base and blasted his first homer of the season, a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth. Zach Reis also swung a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with a double, four RBI, and three runs scored. Keeanu Erb went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, while Nick Zipay was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Luke Erb scored two runs and drove in two runs.

Andrew Hertzog tossed 4.1 innings of relief to earn his first win of the season. The sophomore right-hander allowed two runs - one earned - while scattering three hits and striking out two batters.

Sean Pavlik bounced back from a shaky outing on Monday by tossing a complete-game and earning the win in game one. He scattered eight hits and gave up three runs (two earned), while striking out five. Pavlik received defensive help with Zipay gunning down two runners attempting to steal, both coming in the bottom of the fourth.

At the plate, Berks started out the game with a walk to Zipay and Luke Erb reached on an error. Tom Grablewski then smacked a three-run homer to deep left center to put Berks up 3-0 in the early going. Troy Salerno popped the first home run of his career, a two-run shot to give the Nittany Lions an 8-1 advantage in the third. Cory Fox drilled a three-run homer to left field in the top of the fifth to cap off the scoring.

Grablewski finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Salerno was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Zipay went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up their spring trip with two game on Thursday, March 10. They will face Mount Aloysius at noon, followed by the University of Scranton at 3 p.m.
