Offense keeps rolling as Nittany Lions sweep final day of spring trip

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team continued scoring in bunches en route to a sweep on the final day of The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. The Nittany Lions opened up the day with a late rally to down Mount Aloysius College, 10-4, and followed it up with a 17-13 victory over the University of Scranton in the second game of the twinbill.

The Nittany Lions (8-1) trailed Mount Aloysius 4-0 after three innings and were down 4-3 at the end of seven. Berks went ahead 5-4 in the eighth when two runs came around to score on an error by the left fielder and Keeanu Erb tacked on two more runs with a triple. Tom Grablewski capped off the 7-run inning with a bases clearing double to build a 10-4 lead in Berks' favor.

Mitch Renninger picked up the with five strikeouts in eight innings of work, which are both career-highs. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Mounties (5-4) loaded the bases with one out, but Renninger forced an inning ending double play to work out of the jam.

Luke Erb got the Nittany Lions on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run, the first of his collegiate career. Grablewski finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Cory Fox went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and Pearce Harhigh added a double, one runs scored and an RBI.

In the second game, Berks outlasted Scranton in a slugfest in which the teams combined for 30 runs, 35 hits, and 11 extra base hits. The Nittany Lions scored five runs in both the bottom of the second and fourth to lead 10-6. The Royals scored three in the top of the sixth to make it an 11-10 score, but Berks countered with three runs in their half of the inning. Scranton then battled back to 14-13 in the eighth, but again the Nittany Lions put up a 3-spot to pull away.

Grablewski went 4-for-6 at the dish with two stolen bases, two RBI, and three runs scored. John McGarvey was 3-for-4 with a triple and a team-high four runs batted in, while Alex Doyle followed with three RBI after going 2-for-4 with a double. Austin Madeja added two hits and scored three runs, while Toby Welk and Harhigh both had two hits and two runs scored. Fox and Dalton Hughes each had one hit and scored two runs.

Dylen Ziegler picked up his second win of the season in 1.2 innings of relief. Sean Pavlik entered the game with one in the top of the eighth with Berks clinging to a one-run lead. The sophomore right-hander finished off the final five outs to secure the first save as a member of the Nittany Lions.

Berks will look to keep its momentum going when they return home host No. 13 ranked Salisbury University on Thursday, March 17 at 3 p.m.
