Baseball splits doubleheader with Manhattanville

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team earned a 5-2 win in the opener against Manhattanville College, before suffering its first loss of the season in an 11-7 setback to the Valiants on Monday evening at The Ripken Experience.

In the opener, Dylen Ziegler tossed five strong innings, scattering five hits and allowing two runs to pick up the win. The left-hander struck out three batters and issued two walks. Mitch Renninger threw two perfect innings of relief to earn the third save of his career. He recorded a pair of straight outs to end the game.

Luke Erb continued his hot start at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. John McGarvey went 1-for-1 with a double and two runs batted in. He also nailed a runner trying to steal to end a threat in the top of the fourth. Tom Grablewski was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two stolen bases, while Dylan Gallagher added a double and an RBI.

In the second game, the Nittany Lions (4-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Pearce Harhigh. But the lead was short lived as the Valiants (1-4) plated five runs in the bottom of the inning and followed that up with six runs in the sixth to jump ahead 11-3. Berks came to life in the top of the seventh with Alex Doyle getting the scoring started with an RBI single. Toby Welk ripped a two-run scoring triple to right center and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Max Edgin, but that was the end of the scoring for the Nittany Lions.

Sophomore Tyler Comport ripped the first home run of his collegiate career with an opposite field shot in the top of the sixth. Harhigh, Doyle, Welk, and Erb each collected two hits in the second game.

The Nittany Lions will face Swarthmore College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 9. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
