Baseball sweeps Lehman on first day of The Ripken Experience

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team had plenty of offense in a sweep of Lehman College, 10-8 and 12-2, on the first day of The Ripken Experience on Sunday afternoon.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions (3-0) overcame a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the third inning and two in both the fourth and fifth innings. Dylan Gallagher earned the win with four innings and six strikeouts. The junior right-hander allowed only two hits, but surrendered three runs, all of which came in the first inning. Gallagher worked through the rocky start by sitting down 10 batters in order. Andrew Hertzog struck out five batters in the final three innings of work.

The Nittany Lions had 10 hits, six of which were for extra bases. Will Budock led the team with two hits, while Tom Grablewski had a double and drove in three runs. Toby Welk, Alex Doyle, and Max Edgin each recorded doubles, while Damian Mace slugged the first triple of his collegiate career.

In the second game, Berks broke the game open with nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with Doyle capping off the scoring with a grand slam. Doyle now has two career home runs, both of which have been grand slams. Gallagher went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Tyler Comport was 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs scored, and an outfield assist. Cory Fox drove in two runs and Nick Zipay scored twice.

The Nittany Lions again recorded 10 hits with six going for extras. Comport had two doubles, while Fox, Gallagher, and John McGarvey each had triples, and Doyle had a homer. Nine different players scored a run and six drove in at least one RBI.
