Baseball splits non-conference tilt with Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team dropped its opener to Muhlenberg College, 5-1, but the offense got back on track in game two with a 14-hit effort in an 18-6 victory to salvage a split in the non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Cedarcreek Field.

The Nittany Lions (9-2) trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but were able to even things up in the top of the third when a double by Tom Grablewski scored Nick Zipay from second base. The Mules tacked on a two runs in the fourth inning and added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to pull away.

In the second game, Sean Pavlik tossed tossed five innings of scoreless, four-hit ball to earn his second win of the season. Pavlik matched a season-high five strikeouts, four of which were caught looking. Andrew Hertzog pitched 1.2 innings of one-hit relief to finish off the game.

The offense worked out of its slump with nine runs in the top of the third inning and added four more in the fourth. Will Budock finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Toby Welk went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, two runs scored, and a double. John McGarvey went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Damian Mace, Luke Erb, and Cory Fox all drove in two runs.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Gettysburg College for a non-conference game with Gettysburg College on Wednesday, March 23 at 3:30 p.m.
