Baseball picks up win over Albright in season opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team picked up a 12-3 victory against Albright College in the 2016 season opener on Tuesday afternoon at Kelchner Field.

The Nittany Lions (1-0) scored all 12 of their runs over the final four innings, capped off with seven runs in the top of the eighth inning. It was the second straight time and third time in four years that Berks opened up its season with a win. With the win, the Nittany Lions improve to 2-6-1 all-time against Albright, with the other victory coming March 31, 2010 when Berks won 7-4.

Max Edgin smacked the first home run of his collegiate career in the top of the fifth inning to even the game at 2-all. The Nittany Lions went ahead in the top of the sixth when Cory Fox scored from third on a failed pick off attempt at first base. After Albright tied the game in their at bats, Keeanu Erb drove in John McGarvey for the go-ahead run and Dalton Hughes scored on a throwing error to put Berks up 5-3 after seven innings. The Nittany Lions then finished off their scoring with seven runs in the eighth inning behind five walks, two hits, and one Albright error.

Senior Nick Zipay went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored out of the top of the lineup. Designated hitter Zach Reis was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, two walks, and a run scored. Toby Welk, who made several dazzling plays at third base, went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in his collegiate debut. Pearce Harhigh went 1-for-1 with a run scored and drove in two runs.

Luke Erb got the start on the hill for the Nittany Lions, tossing three scoreless innings. The left-hander did not allow any hits and struck out three batters. The only base runner allowed by Erb was a walk to the leadoff batter. Mitch Renninger picked up the win on the mound with one inning of relief. Reis pitched did not allow a hit, while walking one and striking out one in the final two innings. The pitcher's combined on a four-hitter with six strike outs and three walks allowed.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Myrtle Beach for eight games on their annual Spring Break Trip. They will open up the trip with a doubleheader against Lehman College on March 6 beginning at 10 a.m.
