Nixon sinks game winner, Nittany Lions clinch playoff spot

READING, PA - Dameon Nixon banked in a running floater with five seconds left in on the clock and the defense held strong on the final possession to help lead the Penn State Berks men's basketball team to a thrilling 88-86 overtime victory SUNY Cobleskill in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

With the win, the Nittany Lions (8-14, 8-8 NEAC) clinched the third and final playoff spot in the south division as they hold a three-game lead over Bryn Athyn College and Penn State Abington with two games left to play.

Michael Aldridge, Christian Burggraf, Trevor Ford, J.C. Keaton, and Nixon were honored for Senior Day prior to tip-off and then each of them were in the starting lineup. Ford came out hot to start the game, scoring six of the Nittany Lions first 10 points with a two layups and a pair of free throws. He finished the contest with a career-high 10 points to go along with six rebounds in 34 minutes of action. In addition, Ford drew a charge with 3:50 left in overtime and recorded a steal on the Fighting Tigers next offensive possession.

Cobleskill had a chance to go ahead in overtime with the game squared at 86-all, but a jumper by Quincey Miller hit off the rim and Joel Ellison scooped up the defensive rebound to set up Nixon's heroics. Ellison pushed the ball ahead to Nixon, who then dribbled down the right sideline before putting up the shot over to defenders. The ball kissed off the glass and rattled in to give Berks the lead.

The Fighting Tigers made a deep pass that was batted out of bounds by Berks with 0.4 seconds left on the clock. Following a time out, Cobleskill's inbound pass was knocked away by Burggraf and the clock ran to zero as the Nittany Lions secured the victory.

Nixon, who played all 45 minutes of the game, finished just shy of a triple-double after recording a game-high 23 points to go along with nine rebounds and eight assists. The senior guard shot 8-of-15 from the floor and was 5-for-5 at the line. Burggraf followed with 19 points, nine boards, and four assists. Baba Waples tallied the first four points of the overtime period en route to a 16 point effort, while dishing out a career-best eight assists. Aldridge tallied his ninth double-double of the season after recording 11 points and 12 boards. Ford rounded out the Nittany Lions in double figures with his 10 points. Keaton recorded three boards and a career-high three steals.

Malik Chambers and Brian Jackson paced the Tigers with 16 points, while Frank E'Sti chipped in 14. Quincey Miller had 14 points, nine, boards, six assists, and four steals.

The Nittany Lions will close out the regular season with a road trip to Wilson College on Friday evening and Gallaudet University on Saturday afternoon.
