Men's basketball drops home bout to SUNY Poly

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team suffered a 81-70 setback to visiting SUNY Polytechnic in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (7-14, 7-8) currently hold a 2.0 game lead over Bryn Athyn College and Penn State Abington for the third and final playoff seed in the South Division. Berks has a 7-8 conference, while the other two school are each 5-10 with three games remaining on the schedule for all three teams.

Berks trailed 42-29 at halftime and were only able to slice the deficit down to as low as eight points with 5:53 remaining in regulation. The Wildcats (12-11, 11-4 NEAC), who are currently in second place in the North, were able to dominate the glass by a 45-24 margin which led to a 15-2 advantage on second chance points.

Baba Waples poured in a team-high 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor to raise his scoring average to 19.6 points per game. For the season, Waples has collected 412 points, which is currently the third most in a single-season in program history. Dameon Nixon stayed hot on offense with a 21 points and a contest-high six assists, while Christian Burggraf hit five 3-pointers and scored all 19 of his points in the second half. Nixon and Burggraf combined to score 33 of the Nittany Lions 41 points in the second half. Michael Aldridge collected 13 rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots.

Terrynce Wilson led the Wildcats with 24 points, followed by Tyler Taverne with 12 points and 12 boards. As a team, SUNY Poly shot 26-for-29 from the free throw line.

The Nittany Lions will continue its playoff push in their final home game of the season with a NEAC tilt against SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday, February 14 at 12 p.m. Prior to tip-off, the Nittany Lions will honor the five student-athletes with senior day festivities.
