Trio of scorers lead men's basketball to win

READING, PA - Darren Major, Baba Waples, and Nelson Hine combined on 11 3-pointers made and 70 points to lead the Penn State Berks men's basketball team to a thrilling 82-79 victory over Wilson College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Sunday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (2-4, 2-1 NEAC) trailed 43-39 at the halftime intermission. But a pair of 3's by Waples and an old-fashion three-point play by Hine out of the break put Berks ahead 48-45 with 18:21 left in regulation. The Nittany Lions would not relinquish that lead the rest of the way, but things got dicey with five seconds left to play. Marquis Nelson drilled a 3-pointer from the corner and was fouled on the play. He converted the rare four-point play to make it an 80-79 game with five seconds remaining. Hine, who received the inbound pass, hit both free throws after being fouled immediately. The Phoenix got off a half-court prayer as time expired, but the shot sailed well wide of the net to send the Nittany Lions and their fans into a frenzy.

Major poured in 33 points after knocking down a career-high seven 3-pointers, which is the second most in a single-game in program history. He finished the contest 12-of-23 from the floor and 7-of-13 from long distance. Major also added a season-high six rebounds. The senior guard has recorded 30+ points twice this season and is currently averaging 23.2 points per game, which leads the NEAC.

Waples tallied 11 of his 17 in points in the second half after going 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. He also added five boards and four assists. Waples is averaging 19.2 points per game, which ranks as the sixth best average in the conference.

Hine, who enjoyed a career-best 25 points in a win over St Elizabeth earlier in the week, turned in what could be the best all-around game of his career. The junior guard registered 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting and matched a career-high with 10 rebounds. In addition, he handled the majority of his 37 minutes played running the point and finished with a career-high six assists.

Major, Waples, and Hine took all of the team's shots from beyond the arc (11-of-24, 45.8%). The trio combined to shoot 47.2% (25-of-53) from the floor and 81.8% (9-for-12) from the foul line.

Monte Stokes provided a boost off the bench with eight points and nine rebounds, while Joel Ellison grabbed eight boards and Matt Thompson followed with six.

Rashaan Bean came off the bench to lead the Phoenix with 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor. The freshman forward also recorded seven boards and two steals. Keion Adams chipped in 17 points, 14 rebounds, and blocked two shots.

The Nittany Lions will travel to DeSales University for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, December 7 at at 8 p.m. They will then travel to Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC battle on Friday, December 9 at 7:30 p.m. for their final game before winter break.
