Men's basketball edged by Gallaudet in home opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team was unable to recover from a late double-digit deficit in an 82-76 setback to Gallaudet University in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest at Beaver Community Center.

Darren Major and Baba Waples accounted for more than 70% of the team's scoring after combining for 54 points and nine 3-pointers made. Major went 11-of-25 from the floor, including 5-of-14 from long distance to finish with a game-high 29 points. Waples, who was 9-of-24 from the field and 4-of-12 from 3-point land, finished with 25 points. Waples also handed out a game-high seven assists and recorded four steals.

The Bison (4-2, 3-0 NEAC South) looked poised to take a 10-point lead into half, but Waples drilled a deep 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to make it 36-29 entering the break. GU built its largest lead of the game at 14 points with 9:41 remaining in the contest and the closest Berks could get the rest of the way was the six point deficit at the final buzzer.

Monte Stokes continued to provide solid play off the bench, chipping in eight points and a team-high nine rebounds in 26 minutes of action. Nelson Hine added six points and four assists, while Matt Thompson had six points and seven boards.

All five of the Bison starters reached double figures in scoring, led by Joshua McGriff with 19 points. The senior center also had 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. Raymond Nelson chipped in 14 points to go along with 17 rebounds and six assists.

The Nittany Lions will host Wilson College in an NEAC South Division contest on Sunday, December 4 at 2 p.m.
