Men's basketball topped by Albright in season opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team opened up the 2016-17 season with an 88-63 setback to Albright College in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening at the Bollman Center.

The Nittany Lions trailed 8-0 out of the gates were down by as much as 17-2 with 12:45 remaining in the opening half. Berks went on a  furious run over the next couple of minutes to cut the deficit to one point with just over four minutes left until halftime. Albright eventually took a 35-28 advantage into the intermission. The Lions used a 21-10 run out of the break to take control of the contest and did not look back the rest of the way.

Baba Waples led the Nittany Lions with 17 points to go along with five rebounds, two steals, and two assists, followed by Darren Major with 12 points and five boards. Joel Ellison added nine points, while fellow starter Matt Thompson chipped in seven points with team-highs of six rebounds and two blocked shots. Dave Polisano and Charles Smith each tallied six points and Smith handed out a team best three assists.

Omari Ringgold registered a contest-high 22 points and Garrett Oplinger added 12 points to lead the Albright offensive attack. Calvert Gantz had a game-high eight boards, while DeJuan Smith dished out five assists.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a road contest at Alvernia University on Tuesday, November 22 at 7 p.m.
