Women's volleyball sweeps tri-match at Misericordia

DALLAS, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team overcame a slow start in a thrilling 3-2 win over Misericordia University and followed that up with a convincing 3-0 victory against Centenary (N.J.) College in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Center.

The Nittany Lions (15-6) are riding a five match winning streak and have won 13 of their last 15 contests. They fell behind to the host Cougars after dropping the first two games 25-22 and 25-15, before fighting back and taking the following three games 25-19, 25-15, and 15-10. Berks improves to 4-0 on the year in matches that went five sets, all of which have been played in the last 10 days. The Nittany Lions then took care of the Cyclones by scores of 25-9, 25-12, 25-13.

In the opener, Janae Barlow had a team-high 12 kills, followed by Alexis Horst and Megan Lackman with nine each. Barlow also recorded a career-high seven severice aces to go along with five digs and two block assists. The Nittany Lions had five players reach double digits in digs en route to finishing with 96 as a team. Horst had a contest-high 19 digs, followed by Madison Wojciechowski(18), Lackman (16), Laken Bankert (15), and Morgan Schwartz (12). Schwartz recorded 37 assists and also chipped in three kills.

Samantha Gonzalez matched a season-best with her team leading 11 kills against Centenary. The freshman outside hitter also recorded nine digs, four service aces, and handed out three assists. Jen Maxwell chipped in five kills, while Barlow and Elina Fantilli each had four. Cristine Humer, Lackman, and Fantilli each tallied two aces. Bankert, playing primarily at setter for the first time this season, dished out 24 assists to go along with six digs and three kills.

The Nittany Lions will host Alvernia University in their Pink Game fundraiser on Thursday, October 13 at 7 p.m.
