Men's soccer outlasts Gallaudet, 4-3

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team let a late lead slip away, but for the second day in a row Tom Ulrich struck with the winning margin as the Nittany Lions downed Gallaudet University, 4-3, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 6-6 on the season and 6-2 in the NEAC, while Gallaudet drops to 3-9-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the conference. Berks has 18 points in the conference standings, which places them in third place, trailing Penn State Abington (24 points) and Morrisville State College (21 points) who are ranked first and second, respectively.

The Bison got on the board first with a goal in the 11th minute on a converted penalty kick by Angel Ortiz. The Nittany Lions were able to find the equalizer when Cole Mays added score in the 18th minute with Dan Zhmurkin providing the assist. T.J. Yurkovic gave Berks a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission with an unassisted goal at the 42:42 mark of the opening period.

Zhmurkin gave the Nittany Lions a two-goal cushion when he put home a rebound in the 58th minute. But an own goal by Berks and a header off of a corner by Sean Huber in a five minute stretch midway through the second half made it a 3-all game and had momentum on the Bison side.

The Nittany Lions were able to gain a corner kick with under five minutes to go. The insert got knocked out by the Bison to give Berks another chance on a corner. The second time around did not work either, but the clear found its way to the feet of Mays just outside the box. Mays sent a deep pass into the box then got through the defense and was deflected into the near corner by Ulrich at the 86:19 mark of the game. Ulrich, who had the lone goal in the Nittany Lions 1-0 victory over Wilson College on Friday evening, raised his season total to three goals on the season.

The Bison did not go down without a fight as they put pressure deep in the Nittany Lions zone, but Ulrich thwarted the threat by knocking the ball out of play for a thrown-in. The Bison were able to force three corners in the final two minutes and had a shot sail wide of target in the final seconds of the game.

Gerardo Sosa finished the game with two saves, both of which came in the second half, while Noah Means-Simonsen recorded eight saves on the day.

The Nittany Lions will host Elizabethtown College in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, October 12 at 7 p.m.
