Men's soccer edges Wilson College, 1-0

READING, PA - Tom Ulrich scored late in the first half and the defense made several key stands late in the match to lead the Penn State Berks men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Wilson College in Friday night's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

The Nittany Lions improved to 5-6 overall and 5-2 in the NEAC, while the Phoenix drop to 4-6-2 on the season and 3-3-2 in conference play.

After a back-and-forth first half that saw neither team really applying too much pressure, Berks finally broke through in the 43rd minute. Marvens Labissiere crossed a ball from the left sideline that worked its way through traffic and found Ulrich standing right in front of the box. Ulrich took one touch and delivered a blast over the keeper's head right into the center of the goal. The score was Ulrich's second goal of the season.

Clinging to the one goal lead, the Phoenix had a one-on-one opportunity with Shane Ray coming down the right side. Gerardo Sosa came out of net and made a sliding save on the Phoenix midfielder's low grounder at the 64:57 mark of the contest. Less than 10 minutes later the Phoenix got off another strong shot on goal, but Sosa was able to deflect the ball, which then smacked off the crossbar and out of harm's way.

Down the stretch, the defensive unit of Ulrich, Isaiah Danner, Jakob Fischer, and Jairo Ordonez was able to calm down the pressure on Wilson's offensive attack. Sosa finished the game with three saves to record his fourth shutout of the season, which also makes him the all-time career leader for shutouts in program history.

Berks outshot the Phoenix by a 12-7 margin, including 5-3 in shots on goal, and also held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The men's soccer squad, along with the women's team, hosted their annual Pink Game fundraiser to benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.  The teams, both wearing pink t-shirt jersey's, collected donations from fan's in the stands, as well as hosting a half time shooting contest.

The Nittany Lions will host Gallaudet University in a NEAC contest on Saturday, October 8 at 3 p.m.
