Mummau's late goal lifts Nittany Lions to win over E-Town

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - Lizzie Mummau found the back of the net in the 84th minute and the defense held off a late push to give the Penn State Berks women's soccer team a thrilling 1-0 road win over Elizabethtown College at Ira R. Herr Field on Wednesday night.

The Nittany Lions have three consecutive shutout victories to improve to 14-3-1 on the season, while E-Town drops to 5-10 overall.

In the opening half, Berks out shot the Blue Jays by a 7-2 margin, including 5-0 in shots on goal, however Elizabethtown applied pressure with a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. The second half saw more of an even back-and-forth throughout the period with the Nittany Lions holding a 7-5 (4-2 on goal) edge in shots and again the Blue Jays holding the advantage in corners, this time 4-3.

Late in the second half, Nicole Brigante played a through ball up ahead to Mummau, who then used her speed to dribble deep into the E-Town end of the field. After getting a long touch and passing the last defender, Mummau took a few touches and was able to beat the keeper with a low liner through the left side of the net. The goal was Mummau's 15th of the season, while Brigante notched her third assist of the year.

Clinging to the 1-0 lead, the Blue Jays made it interesting after working a corner kick with just under 1:00 minute remaining in regulation. The insert of from the right corner came to the near post and bounced around in front of the box. An E-Town player collected the loose ball and got off a shot, but the Berks defense blocked it out of play which gave the Blue Jays another corner opportunity. This time from the left corner, the ball was sent into play and the Nittany Lions were able to clear out of harm's way.

Kaylee Frapaul, who entered at the start of the second half, finished the match with two saves to improve to 3-0 on the season. The back line unit of Brennan Moyer, Shelby Baker, Megan Jardine, and Karina Raykova again provided suffocating defense to limit the Blue Jay scoring chances.

Hailey Parks finished the contest with eight saves in goal for the Blue Jays. Shannon Conland and Lindsay Hoagland registered the shots on goal for E-Town.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the regular season with a NEAC tilt against Penn State Abington on Saturday, October 29 at 1 p.m. Prior to the start, the Nittany Lions will honor Mummau, Moyer, Dana Sarcinello, and Morgan Shade with Senior Day recognition.
