Men's soccer clinches spot in NEAC playoffs

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team earned a second straight trip to the playoffs after defeating Penn College of Technology, 4-0, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 8-9 overall and 8-4 in the conference, which has them tied with Keuka College in fourth place with 24 points. The Wildcats drop to 3-15 on the season and 2-10 in the NEAC.

Berks applied pressure from the start of the contest with six corner kicks and four shots in the first 16:39 of the contest, but had not found the back of the net on any of those shots. T.J. Yurkovic finally put the Nittany Lions on the scoreboard in the 18th minute after taking a cross from Dan Zhmurkin and depositing a line drive past the keeper for his eighth goal of the season. In the 29th minute, Jairo Ordonez directed a corner kick into the front of the net that Trent Moyer headed over the keeper for his first goal of the season to give Berks a 2-0 advantage.

The score remained that way for the remainder of the first half and well into the second period until Cole Mays tallied an unassisted goal in the 84th minute. The scoring was capped off in the 88th minute when Robert Ekvall recorded his first goal of the season with Jared Desandies providing the assist.

The defensive unit of Isaiah Danner, Gordon Daichendt, Tom Ulrich, Ordonez, and Jakob Fischer denied the Wildcats from putting together strong scoring opportunities and Gerardo Sosa made saves on the only two shots to make their way on net. Sosa and the defense recorded their program-best sixth shutout of the season.

For the contest, Berks outshot the Wildcats 21-5, including 10-2 on shots on goal, and held a 12-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in the regular season finale on Saturday, October 29 at 3 p.m. Prior to the start of the contest, Danner and Daichendt will be honored with Senior Day recognition.
