Yurkovic's record setting performance keys win over Abington

READING, PA - Isaiah Danner and Gordon Daichendt were honored prior to the start of the contest, but T.J. Yurkovic stole the show with a record setting performance in a 7-1 victory over Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 9-9 on the year, matching the school record for wins set last year, and now sit at 9-4 in the conference. They wrapped up the No. 4 seed in the standings and will host No. 5 Wells College in a quarterfinal round game on Tuesday, November 1 at 2 p.m. This will be the first time that the men's soccer team hosted a playoff game in program history.

Yurkovic set the single game record with five goals and established the new high for points with 11. He tallied his for goal of the game after Abington turned the ball over deep in their end and Yurkovic took two touches and flipped the ball over the keeper's head at the 6:28 mark of the game. Just 27 seconds later, Manny Zavala took possession of the ball at midfield and sent a pass over the defense that Yurkovic sent inside the left post to go ahead 2-0. Yurkovic then recorded the hat-trick in the 31st minute off of a feed from Cole Fagley to put the contest completely in Berks' control.

In the second half, Yurkovic shared in the scoring when he set Dan Zhmurkin up with a perfect pass in front of the net. Zhmurkin came flying in from the right side and deflected the ball into the wide open net for his ninth goal of the season at 51:05. A little over a minute later, Yurkovic was fouled in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick at 52:08. Yurkovic capped off his scoring binge when Jon Mercier played a ball over the defense and Yurkovic ripped near corner past the keeper at 55:39.

Bryan Franco joined in on the fun with Berks final score of the day when he sent a shot over the keeper off a feed from Marvens Labissiere in the 80th minute.

Berks was close to picking up another shut win, but Abington was awarded a penalty kick that was successful by Marco Martins in the 88th minute.

Gerardo Sosa finished the contest with four saves, recording two in each half. Danner and Daichendt, as they have throughout their careers with the Nittany Lions, turned in a solid effort on the back line. Tom Ulrich, Jairo Ordonez, and Jakob Fischer also helped out in silencing the Abington offense.

The winner of the NEAC Quarterfinal round match between Penn State Berks and Wells College will then face tournament host and top-seed Morrisville State College on Saturday, November 5 in the semifinal round. The NEAC Finals will take place on Sunday, November 6, also on the campus of Morrisville State. More information on the tournament will be released on Monday.
