Volleyball tops Gallaudet, 3-1

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team turned in one of its finest performances of the season en route to a 3-1 victory over Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Friday evening at Bardo Gymnasium on the campus of Penn College of Technology.

The Nittany Lions improve to 18-9 overall and 8-3 in the NEAC to inch closer to securing a spot in the postseason tournament, while Gallaudet now falls to 15-15 on the year and drops to second place in the conference standings at 10-2.

The opening set saw a back-and-forth battle with both teams going on lengthy runs. The Nittany Lions led 15-9, before Gallaudet streaked by with a run of nine straight points of their own, but the Nittany Lions eventually claimed the match 26-24. The second set looked to be heading in favor of the Bison who led 23-15, but Berks reeled off eight consecutive points to pull even. Again, the teams exchanged points until Berks recorded two straight points for a 31-29 triumph. The third set saw Gallaudet pull away for a 25-20 win to make a 2-1 score. Needing to squash the Gallaudet momentum, the Nittany Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth set and never looked back a 25-14 win in the clincher.

The Nittany Lions relied on just five members of its squad to record all of the teams 52 kills. Janae Barlow and Megan Lackman each tallied 15 kills to lead the way, followed by Alexis Horst with 10. Megan DeAbreu added eight kills and Jen Maxwell chipped in four. Barlow notched a team-high five service aces, the bulk of which came in the Nittany Lions rally in the second the game. At the net, Horst and DeAbreu each tallied two solo blocks, while Barlow added one solo and one block assist. Morgan Schwartz finished the contest with 46 assists to raise her season total to 845.

The defensive unit combined for 73 digs, led by libero Madison Wojciechowski with 23, while Lackman (11) and Laken Bankert (10) also reached double digits. Schwartz tallied eight digs followed by Horst with seven, while DeAbreu and Cristine Humer each had five.

This was the Nittany Lions first victory since October 2, 2011 against Gallaudet, who are the reigning six-time conference champions.

The Nittany Lions will conclude conference play on Saturday, October 22 beginning with Penn College at 12 p.m. and Wilson College at 4 p.m.
