Women's volleyball outlasts Mustangs, 3-2

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team found itself on the winning side of a 3-2 decision in a back-and-forth thriller against Morrisville State College in Sunday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions, who have won three of their last four matches, improve to 11-6 on the season and 4-2 in the NEAC, while the Mustangs fall to 14-6 overall and are now 8-2 in the conference. Morrisville State jumped out to an early lead after claiming a 25-20 victory in the opening game. But the Berks offense went on fire over the next two games which they won 25-14 and 25-12. The Mustangs then evened the series at 2-all with a 25-19 win in the fourth game. In the fifth and final set, the Nittany Lions used an early run and later outlasted the Mustangs with a 15-10 triumph.

Alexis Horst notched her seventh double-double of the season after recording a team-high 13 kills to go along with 17 digs. Megan Lackman continued her strong play at the net, finishing with a career-high 12 kills and adding two block assists. Janae Barlow chipped in nine kills and four service aces, while Megan DeAbreu had five kills, one solo block, and one block assist. Madison Wojciechowski lead the Nittany Lions with 22 digs, followed by Horst (17), Morgan Schwartz (15), and Laken Bankert (11). Schwartz also handed out 41 assists, marking the third time this season the freshman setter had 40 or more assists.

Megyan Merrill led the Mustangs with 13 kills, followed by Courtney LaVere and Elycia Crittenden with 10 each. Samantha Wolf had a contest-high 23 digs.

Berks is 2-0 in matches that go all five sets. The other win in a five-setter came this past Thursday against Ursinus College.

The Nittany Lions will face Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC contest on Wednesday, October 5 at 5:30 p.m. The two teams played earlier in the season with the Nittany Lions winning by a score of 3-1.
