Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Nittany Lions hold on for 3-2 win over LBC

LANCASTER, PA - For the third time in six days, the Penn State Berks women's volleyball team played in a five-set thriller and for the third time eeked out a 3-2 victory. Most recently was against Lancaster Bible College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday afternoon at Horst Athletic Center.

The Nittany Lions improved to 12-6 overall and sit at 5-2 in the conference, while LBC now sports a 7-12 overall record and 3-4 mark in the NEAC. Unlike the previous five-set matches, Berks actually jumped out to an early lead on Wednesday with wins of 25-22 and 25-15 in the first two games. With their backs against the wall, the Chargers battled back and grabbed the momentum with convincing 25-11 and 25-16 wins to force the decisive set.

The fifth game proved to be as back-and-forth battle with LBC taking the first two points for an early lead. The Nittany Lions then reeled off six straight points to lead 6-2, but four straight errors by Berks evened the game at 6-all. Berks then extended its lead to 10-6, but the Chargers came out strong out of a time out with four straight points to pull even at 10. The teams exchanged two-point runs of the own to bring the contest at 12-all and then traded a point each to make it 13-13. Megan DeAbreu then notched a kill to bring the score to game point and Morgan Schwartz finished it off with a service ace to finally end hard fought battle.

Megan Lackman paced the offense with a team-high eight kills followed by Janae Barlow with seven, while DeAbreu and Alexis Horst added six kills each. Schwartz, Barlow, Horst, and Samantha Gonzalez all had two service aces. Madison Wojciechowski, the reigning NEAC Defensive Player of the Week, recorded 23 digs followed by Laken Bankert with 17. Schwartz handed out 34 assists to go along with 16 digs and three kills.

Alyssa Bowen had a contest-high 15 kills and seven block assists, while Hannah Gipe added eight kills and three total blocks. Hannah Thompson recorded a game-high 26 of the Chargers 89 digs.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wilson College for a non-conference contest on Friday, October 7 at 7 p.m.
