Waples sinks game winner in final seconds

READING, PA - For the second straight night the Penn State Berks men's basketball team hit a game winning 3-pointer in the final seconds, this time coming off of the hot hand of Baba Waples to knock off Keuka College, 83-82, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Friday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (5-9, 5-3 NEAC) overcame a five point deficit in the final minute to pick up another dramatic comeback win. Waples, who netted a career-high 33 points, hit a 3-pointer with with 53 seconds remaining to make it a 82-80 Wolfpack advantage. Matt Thompson pulled down a defensive rebound on the following possession to set the Nittany Lions up with the final shot of the game. With 3.2 on the clock, Christian Burggraf inbounded from the sideline to Waples in the corner, who then drilled the game winner with a defender in his face to set the crowd into a frenzy. The Wolfpack got off a desperation halfcourt shot then banked high off the glass to secure the Berks victory.

The Nittany Lions took a 46-43 lead into the halftime break and as many as five points in the second half and the teams saw five lead changes and five tied scores throughout the period.

Waples scored 13 of the Nittany Lions final 16 points over the course of the last five minutes of action. The junior guard finished the game 12-of-15 from the floor, 3-of-4 from long distance, and 6-for-6 at the foul line. Burggraf, coming off a monster game on Thursday, knocked down five 3-pointers and recorded 17 points to go with his five steals, four rebounds, and two assists. Dameon Nixon continued his strong play with 15 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. Nixon raised his career total to 986 points. Thompson turned in a career-performance with 10 points, on 4-of-9 shooting, with six boards and two blocked shots. Michael Aldridge led the Nittany Lions with eigh rebounds.

Keuka received 23 points and five rebounds from Casey Williams, while Cliff Stevens added 15 points and nine boards.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn College of Technology in their Pink Game fundraiser on Wednesday, January 27 at 6 p.m.
