Women's soccer uses second half rally to edge Alvernia

READING, PA (September 10, 2015) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team scored two goals in the second half en route to a 2-1 come from behind victory over visiting Alvernia University in Thursday afternoons rain soaked contest.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Bailey Stover converted a header off of a corner kick at the 9:17 mark of the first half. The score would remain that way for a long time until Lizzie Mummau worked past the defense and fed Dana Sarcinello with a pass inside the box. Sarcinello took one touch a drilled a shot inside the right post to even the game at 1-all in the 69th minute. Mummau nearly put Berks ahead less than a minute later, but her shot went just wide of the goal. Keri Klimko had a nice look in the 82nd minute, but the shot sailed just above the cross bar.

Then in the 84th minute, Caitlin Golden was taken down just outside the box to force a free kick which was taken by Sarcinello. The junior midfielder put the ball on target, but the Alvernia keeper was able to deflect it out. Fortunately, for Berks, the ball wound up right at Paige Clawser's foot, who then sent the ball into the open net for what eventually proved to be the gamewinner.

Paige Elmy recorded four saves to earn her second win of the season, while Jessica Plunkett made eight stops in net.

The Nittany Lions had a 10-5 advantage on shots on goal, while the Crusaders held a 5-2 edge on corner kicks.

Berks will make its first road trip this season when they travel to Dickinson College for a non-conference contest on Sunday, September 13 at 1 p.m.
