Nittany Lions halted by Salisbury

YORK, PA (May 14, 2015) - Following a thrilling win in the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship the night before, the Penn State Berks baseball team hit a road block against the high octane offense of the fifth ranked team in the country Salisbury University, falling by a score of 16-5 on Thursday evening at Santander Stadium.

The Nittany Lions held it close through the first few innings of the game, but Salisbury tacked on three runs in the third and the fourth innings and broke it open with a combined seven runs over the next two innings. The Sea Gulls (31-4-1) rank among the top 10 in the nation in five offensive categories, including second in Division III in batting average (.353), on-base percentage (.445), and runs per game (9.8).

Steve Koenig, who entered the game on one of his hottest stretches of his career, worked his way through the lineup in the early going. Koenig retired the first five batters of the game via fly out to Cory Fox in centerfield, which were all routine flies with the exception of a beautiful diving catch to end the first inning. Koenig gave way to relief in the fifth inning and the Sea Gulls continued their strong output the rest of the way.

After falling behind 7-0, the Nittany Lion offense refused to quit and put up two runs in the bottom of the with two hits and taking advantage of two Salisbury errors. Berks added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth after a walk and four straight base hits.

Kyle Hartman, coming off his pitching gem on Wednesday, went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Zach Reis collected two hits, a run, and an RBI, while Connor Corson and Keeanu Erb each tallied a hit and drove in a run.

The Nittany Lions will look to stay alive in the regional tournament when they play Johns Hopkins University in an elimination game on Friday, May 15 at 10 a.m.
