Baseball knocked out of regional by Johns Hopkins

YORK, PA (May 15, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball team was ousted from the NCAA Mid-East Regional after falling to Johns Hopkins University by a score of 10-1 at Santander Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions close out the season with an overall record of 21-19-1 and a .524 winning percentage, which is the second highest in program history. The season saw many ups and downs along the way, but the 2015 squad got its act together and won 11 of the final 15 games of the season. In addition, they knocked off the No. 4 team in the country Kean University, marking the first win over a national ranked team in program history.

The Blue Jays (29-12-1) were able to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead after a pair of three-run innings in the second and third. JHU will advance to the 7:30 game on Friday afternoon, where they will face the winner of Misercordia University and Kean in an elimination game.

Nick Zipay and Connor Corson each went 2-for-4 to lead the offense. Corson legged out a single to shortstop in the top of the ninth to end his four-year career with 124 hits, which is the fifth most in program history. Max Edgin drove in the Nittany Lions lone run with a single up the middle to score Dylan Gallagher who walked to lead off the inning. Mitch Renninger tossed 1.1 innings of two-hit scoreless relief to close out the game.

Tom Grablewski, who went 1-for-4, finished out the season on one of the hottest streaks of his career. In the final 10 games of the season, seven of which came in postseason play, the junior third baseman batted 22-for-39 with 11 runs, eight RBI, and six games with three hits apiece. In that stretch, he raised his batting average from .301 to .368, which is the highest on the team.

The senior group of Corson, Kyle Hartman, Steve Koenig, and John Bonino close out their time with the blue-and-white having reached the NCAA Regional Tournament each of the last two years. Corson and Hartman rank among top all-time in most offensive categories, while Koenig and Bonino rank among the top-ten in many pitching categories. Hartman will go down as the top-pitcher all-time in program history as he stepped up huge on the biggest stages with wins two wins in the 2014 NEAC Tournament and a phenomenal complete-game win against Kean on Wednesday.

With the bulk of the roster expected to return, the Nittany Lions should again look to build on the amazing finish from the 2015 campaign.
