Doyle's grand slam lifts Nittany Lions to win

COLLEGEVILLE, PA (April 6, 2015) - Alex Doyle ripped an eighth inning grand slam and the Penn State Berks baseball team poured on eight runs over the final two frames to power the Nittany Lions to an 11-8 win over Ursinus College in a non-conference contest on Monday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (6-9-1) surrendered three runs in the bottom of the third and seventh inning and took a 6-3 deficit heading into the top of the eighth. Kyle Hartman led off the inning with a homer to right field to swing the momentum into Berks' favor. Max Edgin walked, Connor Corson reached on an infield single, and Pearce Harhigh loaded the bases when Ursinus botched his sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases with no outs. After a pitching change, Doyle laced the very first pitch he saw way over the right field fence that put the Nittany Lions ahead 8-6.

Leading for the first time since being up 1-0, pitcher Steve Koenig got the shutdown inning the team needed to keep the momentum on the Nittany Lions side. After a leadoff single, Koenig got an out at first base on a sacrifice bunt. He then got a strikeout and forced a ground out to get out of the inning.

Doyle struck again in the top of the ninth to pad the lead. After a pair of walks, Doyle delivered a one-out single to right field that scored Harhigh from second when the right fielder misplayed the ball. Nick Zipay later plated both runners with a double over the left fielders head to make it an 11-6 ballgame.

The Bears (12-5) got a two-out, two-run home run to cut the lead to three runs, but Koenig recorded his career-best seventh strike out to pick up his second win of the season. The senior right-hander tossed 6.2 innings of relief, scattering seven hits and allowing five runs (four earned) to help Berks defeat Ursinus for the first time in program-history. Koenig recorded at least one strike out in every full inning he had in the game.

Prior to the late game outburst, Berks scored a single run in the first, fifth, and seventh innings. Zipay led of the game with single, stole second, and scored on a single by Cory Fox. Keeanu Erb led of the fifth with a double and Fox recorded another RBI with a single up the middle. Erb scored a run in the seventh on a wild pitch.

Doyle finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Fox was 3-for-6. Zipay, Hartman, and Erb each tallied two hits. The Nittany Lions collectively pounded out 14 hits, four of which were extra base hits.

Chris Jablonski led the Bears by going 3-for-3 with two homers, three RBI, and two runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wilkes University for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 8 at 1 p.m.
