Baseball extends win streak to six

READING, PA (April 28, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball team defeated York (PA) College, 8-4 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. It was the Nittany Lions sixth straight win and eighth in the last nine games.

Steve Koenig improved to 4-1 on the season and the Nittany Lions improved to 16-15-1, marking the first time this season they had a win percentage above .500 since opening the season 1-0. Koenig allowed two runs while scattering six hits and striking out two batters in 5.0 innings of work. Kyle Hartman pitched 1.2 innings of hitless relief to pick up the save. It was only fitting that Koenig and Hartman be the pitcher's of record as it was the final time the two seniors will ever play on Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lion defense turned in one of their finest performances of the season after the pitching staff forced 16 groundouts. Shortstop Colin Myers recorded six assists, while Troy Salerno added five. With bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Salerno made a nice stop on a short hopper to start a 4-6-3 inning ending double play. An inning later, Tom Grablewski fielded a one-hopper and quickly turned it to second base for a 5-4-3 twin killing to close out the inning.

The Spartans went ahead 2-0 in the top of the fourth, but the Nittany Lions responded with a pair of runs in their half of the inning. Cory Fox leadoff with a walk and stole immediately stole second base. Grablewski then singled and advanced to second when the throw from the outfield to get Fox at third was late. Hartman tied the game when he sliced a single down the left field line.

Berks took advantage of a couple of York miscues to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Myers and Will Budock were moved into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt by Nick Zipay. With two outs, Fox hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped by the outfield and allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate. Grablewski followed with a single and Fox advanced to third base when another Spartan error led to a run. With runners on the corner, Grablewski left earlier and got the pitcher to step off and throw to second base. Grablewski attempted to get into a run down to allow Fox to score from third, but the shortstops throw hit off of Grablewski diving back into first base and allowed Fox to easily score from third.

Zipay led of the seventh with a single and went first to third on a failed pick off attempt by the pitcher ran down the right field line. Grablewski collected his third hit of the game to score Zipay.  Zach Reis followed with a single and Hartman unloaded a double to deep center field to plate two more runners.

Grablewski finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. He ran his career totals in hits to 102, making him just the fifth member in program history to enter the 100-hit club. Hartman went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in.

The Nittany Lions will finish off the regular season with a pair of NEAC games at Gallaudet University on Saturday, May 2 at 1 p.m.
