Baseball sweeps Lancaster Bible on Senior Day

READING, PA (April 25, 2015) - Sean Pavlik's bid for a no-hitter and Kyle Hartman's late go-ahead home run powered the Penn State Berks baseball team to a 5-2 win over Lancaster Bible College in game one of the doubleheader. Zach Reis turned in a masterful pitching performance in a 3-1 win in game two to earn the sweep on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions moved to 15-15-1 overall and improved to 7-5 in the conference, while LBC falls to 10-17 on the season and 7-5 in the NEAC.

Pavlik carried a no-hitter into the top of the ninth and got the leadoff batter to strikeout, making him two outs away from the no-no. But cleanup hitter Erich Carroll broke it up with a single in no-man's land in shallow left center field. Centerfielder Cory Fox, knowing what was at stake, tried his hardest to get to the ball, but it fell in for a single. Pavlik bounced back from the heartbreak of giving up the hit by getting a 5-4-3 double play to end the game and seal the victory.

Pavlik fired a complete-game one hitter, allowing two unearned runs while striking out nine batters. The freshman right-hander set down the first nine batters in order, before allowing a leadoff walk in the fourth. That runner was erased with another 5-4-3 twin killing. Pavlik only faced three batters in six of the nine innings.

Berks plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning after the first four batters reached base safely. Hartman singled up the middle, Connor Corsonwalked, and Luke Erb's sacrifice turned into a bunt single that loaded the bases. Second basement Troy Salerno lined a single over the shortstops head to score two runs. Erb and Salerno pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third with no outs, but the Chargers were able to escape with no further damage.

LBC took advantage of a few Berks miscues to tie the game at 2-all in the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Hartman launched a home run to right field that landed well beyond the 330 foot marker hanging on the outfield fence. The moon shot was his second of the season and eighth of his career, which is tied for the most in program-history.

The Nittany Lions added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Tom Grablewski led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved up to third on a deep fly to right center. Luke Erb singled up the middle to score Grablewski to go ahead 4-2. Hartman, who was intentionally walked earlier in the inning, scored from second base when Salerno had a bunt single and the throw sailed wide of the first baseman.

Luke Erb finished the game 3-for-4, while Hartman and Salerno were each 2-for-3. Nick Zipay drew three of the teams six walks.

Reis was nearly as dominant as Pavlik in the nightcap, scattering four hits and allowing just one unearned run in a complete game effort that improved him to 2-2 on the season. The sophomore, right-hander struck out three batters and did not issue any walks.

Dylan Gallagher lead off the bottom of the second with a single and Damian Mace followed with a single and advanced to second on the relay throw to third that was late. Luke Erb poked a single through the right side to score both runners and build a 2-0 lead. They tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth when Keeanu Erb led off with a single and later scored on a single by Zipay. Keeanu Erb finished the contest 3-for-3.

Prior to the start of the game, the Nittany Lions honored seniors John Bonino, Corson, Hartman, and Steve Koenig for their impressive careers as members of the program.

The Nittany Lions will host York (PA) College in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m.
