Baseball splits road doubleheader with Cazenovia

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. (April 19, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 4-1 setback to Cazenovia College in the opener before the floodgates opened and the Nittany Lions dropped a 16-1 thumping in the night cap of the NEAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (11-15-1, 5-5 NEAC) were kept off balance by the Wildcats staff ace Chris Schad, who finished with eight strikeouts in game one. Berks managed only six hits, led by Nick Zipay's 2-for-4 effort at the plate. The lone run came in the seventh inning when Will Budock led off with a single, stole second base and was knocked in on an RBI single by Pearce Harhigh.

Andrew Hertzog surrendered four runs - three earned - in 4.0 innings of work with three strikeouts. Mitch Renninger tossed one scoreless inning of relief, while John Bonino threw 3.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Nittany Lions scored two runs in the opening frame before tacking on five more in the fifth innning and putting up a seven-spot in the sixth inning. Cory Fox went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and four RBI. Dylan Gallagher collected two hits and two RBI. Six different players each scored two runs and the Nittany Lions managed to draw a season high 13 walks.

Steve Koenig earned the win on the mound after tossing 6.0 innings of three hit ball. He allowed just one runs while striking out three batters. Dom Continenza worked a perfect inning of relief, striking out two batters and forcing a ground out.

The Nittany Lions will host Muhlenberg College in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, April 22 at 3:30 p.m.
