Baseball earns road sweep over SUNY Polytechnic

MARCY, N.Y. (April 18, 2015) - After struggling to drive runners in the last few games, the Penn State Berks baseball team scored early and often in an 11-3 win in the opener against SUNY Polytechnic on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions then rode the strong pitching from Zach Reis in a 5-0 shutout to earn a sweep in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader at Peter A. Spina Field.

The Nittany Lions (9-14-1, 3-4 NEAC) scored two runs in the opening frame, added one more in the second, and tacked on another two to go ahead 5-0 after three at-bats. The Wildcats (7-10, 3-2 NEAC) eventually cut the lead to 6-2, but Berks pulled away with five insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Sean Pavlik threw 8.1 innings to earn his two straight victory. The freshman right-hander scattered 10 hits, while allowing three runs - two earned - and striking out five batters. Dom Continenza got the final two outs of the game with a strikeout and groundout.

Reis went 3-for-4 with a triple and a sacrifice bunt, while Nick Zipay was 2-for-6 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Tom Grablewski and Cory Fox each had two hits and scored two runs. Connor Corson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Keeanu Erb added two hits, a stolen base, and an RBI

In the second game, Reis worked out of trouble in a few of the first few innings before facing the minimum amount of batters over the final three innings. A pair of errors in the first inning gave the Wildcats runners on second and third with just one out. But Reis escaped any trouble by forcing back to back groundouts to himself to leave the runners stranded.

The Wildcats had a one out double and the runner advanced to third on a groundout in the second inning. Reis again took care of things on his own, this time by strike out to retire the side. After a clean third inning, the Wildcats had two runners on base in the fourth before Reis worked an inning ending groundout to short. The sophomore right-hander set the batters down 1-2-3 in the fifth and seventh inning. A batter reached base on an error in the sixth, but an inning ending double play emptied the bases.

Fox had an RBI double in the top of the third inning to put Berks ahead 1-0. Two batter later, Reis helped his own cause with an RBI single to center field that scored Fox.

Fox added to the lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth that scored Erb. Reis finished off the scoring by driving in two runs with a double in the top of the seventh inning to build the lead to 5-0.

Reis finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Zipay was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Cazenovia College for a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
