Alvernia outduels Nittany Lions, 2-1

READING, PA (April 16, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball teams found themselves on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel on Thursday afternoon, falling 2-1 to local foe Alvernia University in a non-conference contest at Angelica Park.

Playing for just the third time in program-history, the one-run setback was by far the best performance the Nittany Lions (8-14-1) have had against their crosstown counterpart. The previous meetings yielded wins by scores of 18-2 (April 19, 2010) and 24-0 (March 29, 2006) in favor of the Crusaders (22-8). Starting pitcher Tim Carfrey tossed 7.0 innings of no-hit ball, striking out five and walking four while allowing no runs for Alvernia. Freshman left-hander Dylen Ziegler was not too far off from that performance, surrendering two runs while scattering just four hits in 6.2 innings of work. Senior lefty John Bonino came in to get the final out of the bottom of the seventh inning when Alvernia pressuring with loaded bases.

After being held hitless through 7.1 innings, Troy Salerno sparked the offense with a single through the right side. The sophomore second baseman then stole second base and eventually came around to score on an RBI triple by Luke Erb, that cut the deficit to 2-1.

Bonino set the Crusaders down in order in the bottom of the eighth to keep the momentum in Berks' favor. Alvernia went to its bullpen and senior reliever Kevin Becker-Menditto tossed a 1-2-3 inning to record the save.

Alvernia scored off of sacrifice flies in the second and third inning.

The Nittany Lions will travel to New York for a pair of NEAC doubleheaders this weekend. They will face SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a trip to Cazenovia College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
