Walkoff win leads to split with Keuka

READING, PA (April 12, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball team plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 6-5 win over Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The comeback win allowed the Nittany Lions to salvage a split after dropping the opener 10-2.

The Nittany Lions (8-13-1, 2-4 NEAC) squandered several scoring opportunities in the first game, leaving 16 runners on base, including two or more in five innings. In the ninth inning, Curtis Hershey had an RBI double and scored on a pinch hit single by Tyler Comport to help avoid being shutout.

Wasted opportunity was again the story in the second game with nine runners left on base, seven of which were in scoring position. Fortunately for Berks, they were able to take advantage of several Keuka miscues to pick up the win.

Trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh, Tom Grablewski led off with a walk and Kyle Hartman worked a full count and finally forced a walk. Pinch hitter Cory Fox dropped down a sacrifice bunt so perfect that it led to a single to load the bases. Pinch hitter Zach Reis followed with a walk that forced home Grablewski to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Wolfpack (5-16, 1-3 NEAC) got a strikeout looking for the first out of the inning. Pinch hitter Dylan Gallagher hit a two hopper to the third baseman, who got the force out at second and the relay to first that would have been an inning ending, game saving double play sailed over the first baseman's head. This error allowed both Fox and pinch runner Pearce Harhigh to score and give Berks the 6-5 victory.

Mitch Renninger tossed 2.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts to pick up the win.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Gwynedd-Mercy College for a non-conference contest on Thursday, April 16 at 3:45 p.m.
