Baseball splits conference doubleheader with Penn Tech

READING, PA (April 11, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball team split its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader with the Pennsylvania College of Technology, falling 4-2 in the opener and taking the second game by a 3-1 margin.

Sean Pavlik's gem in the nightcap helped the Nittany Lions (7-12-1, 1-3) salvage a split with the Wildcats. Pavlik scattered five hits and allowed one run, while striking out a career-high 10 batters in the complete-game effort.

Berks broke through for three runs in the third inning, primarily through bunting. Keeanu Erb led off the inning with a bunt down the third base line that was thrown wide of first, allowing Erb to get to second base. Nick Zipay squared around and dropped a perfect sacrifice bunt that turned into a single to put runners on first and third. Cory Fox scored Erb on a squeeze bunt and Zipay, who was attempting to steal on the play, was able to make it from first to the third. Tom Grablewski attempted a squeeze bunt, but it landed foul by a few inches. Two pitches later, Grablewski scored Zipay on a base hit through the right side. The bunting parade came to an end when Zach Reis loaded the bases with a sacrifice bunt that hugged the foul line and turned into a single. Will Budock drew a bases loaded, two-out walk to tally the final run of the inning.

The Wildcats responded with a run in the top of the fourth to cut their deficit to 3-1. Penn Tech would put the tying on base in each of the final two innings, but Pavlik was able to work out of jam to leave the runners stranded. The freshman right-hander struck out the first five batters of the game and did not allow a hit until the eighth batter in the lineup.

In the opener, Reis turned in a solid performance but suffered some bad luck as the Nittany Lions committed six errors. Reis scattered six hits, while allowing four runs - all unearned - to go with his career-high six strikeouts.

Zipay collected two hits, while Grablewski and Luke Erb each recorded an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will host Keuka College in a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 12 at 12 p.m. The men's and women's tennis team, as well as the baseball team will be sponsoring Pink Game fundraisers on Sunday, with all benefits going to the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
