Baseball nipped by Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. (March 29, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball team had the tying run at the plate in the first game and used a 3-run comeback in the nightcap to force extra innings, but both times found themselves on the losing end to Ramapo College on Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners held on for an 8-4 win in the opener and followed that up with a 9-6 walkoff win in game two.

The Nittany Lions (5-7) fell behind early in the opener, trailing 8-2 after the first three innings. They added a run in the top of the fourth when Troy Salerno had a one-out single then stole second base. Salerno got to third after a walk and hit batter, and scored on a fielder's choice by LUKE ERB.

Keith Salmon cut the deficit to 8-4 with an RBI double that scored pinch runner Colin Myers. Max Edgin walked and Connor Corson reached on an error to load the bases with one-out. But Ramapo was able to hold on after recording a strikeout and forcing a pop out to third base.

Mitch Renninger pitched 4.0 strong innings of relief, scattering four hits and allowing one run, while striking out two batters.

Berks got on the board quickly with two runs in the opening frame of the nightcap. Salmon had a two-run, two-out single to left field that scored Erb and Tom Grablewski. The Nittany Lions tacked on another run in the top of the second. Pearce Harhigh reached on an error and Cory Fox followed with a bunt single. KEEANU ERB moved them each up a base with a sacrifice bunt and Harhigh scored on a RBI groundout by LUKE ERB.

The Roadrunners (12-6) got on the board with a run in the third and took a two run lead after scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth. Ramapo tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth to lead 6-3 heading into the top of the seventh.

With their backs against the wall, the Nittany Lions took advantage of several errors in what could have been their final at bats. Fox reached on an error by the second baseman and advanced to third on a one-out double by KEEANU ERB. The two came around to score off of a throwing error on a grounder to short by LUKE ERB. Grablewski singled and Kyle Hartman walked to load the bases with just one out. An error by the third baseman on the next play put the tying run across the plate for Berks.

Andrew Hertzog struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh. He hit the next batter, but then got a groundout to third to send the game in to extra's.

Berks went down in order in the top of the eighth and Ramapo carried that momentum into their half of the inning. The Roadrunners led of the inning with a walk and single, and had the runners move into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Junior Joe Venturino followed up with a three-run, walkoff homer to put the game to an end.

The Nittany Lions will travel to nearby Alvernia College for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, March 31 at 3:30 p.m.
