Baseball finishes in 8-8 tie with Albright

READING, PA (April 1, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball team overcame an early 6-0 deficit, but the comeback bid was shutdown due to darkness as the Nittany Lions and visiting Albright College played to a 12-inning 8-8 tie.

The Nittany Lions (5-7-1)  were trailing 8-7 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when Tyler Comport ripped a game tying RBI single to right field to score pinch runner Colin Myers. Both teams had scoring opportunities in the extra frames, but neither was able to push across the winning run.

In the top of the 11th inning, the Lions (6-5-1) loaded the bases with just one out against reliever Andrew Hertzog. The freshman right-hander, who turned in his greatest performance of the season, induced a grounder to third which got the force out at home. Hertzog then got a slow dribbler to first base to escape the jam.

Prior to that in the bottom of the 10th, Berks had runners on second and third with two outs. Alex Doyle ripped a line drive to the right side of the infield that was knocked out of midair by the soaring second baseman, who then robbed Berks of the win by narrowly getting the out at first base.

Albright got on the board in the opening frame without a hit, taking advantage of an error, a balk, and a wild pitch. They tacked on three runs in the third inning, capped off by a two-run home run by catcher Dylan Boll. The Lions added two more runs in the top of the fourth to take a comfortable 6-0 lead.

The Nittany Lions came storming back with three runs in the fourth, two in the six, and then one run in each of the next three innings. Zach Reis went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a double, while Keeanu Erb was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, and an RBI. Kyle Hartman was 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Dylan Gallagher drove in two runs and Tom Grablewski scored twice.

Hertzog tossed a season-high 5.0 innings of work, surrendering just two hits and did not allow a run. He struck out two batters and forced 10 groundouts. Dom Continenza pitched 3.0 innings of effective relief, scattering four hits and giving up two unearned runs.

The Nittany Lions will begin conference action with a road doubleheader against Penn State Abington on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m.
