Hartman, Nittany Lions edge Gettysburg, 3-2

READING, PA (March 27, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball team returned to action with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Gettysburg College in a non-conference contest on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (5-5), who played for the first time in 15 days, received a strong pitching effort from seniors Kyle Hartman and Steve Koenig to help defeat the Bullets (11-5) for the first time in program history. Hartman (2-0) picked up the win after recording four strike outs and allowing just two unearned runs in 6.0 innings of work. Koenig tossed three innings of scoreless, one-hit ball on his way to earning the first save of his career. The right-hander struck out the first two batters in the top of the ninth and forced a ground out to short to secure the win.

Berks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third using perfectly executed small ball. Nick Zipay had a one-out bunt single and a throwing error on a bunt by Luke Erb led to runners on second and third. Tom Grablewski walked to load the bases and Dylan Gallagher followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Zipay. Erb then scored when a failed pick off attempt of Grablewski sailed wide of the first baseman.

Gettysburg cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth, but the Nittany Lions extended their lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Zipay singled through the right side and advanced to second on a groundout by Erb. Grablewski followed with an RBI line drive down the right field line.

The Bullets looked poised for a big inning the top of the sixth when they had runners on first and second with just one out. Shawn Moffitt had an RBI single that cut the deficit to one with runners on the corners and still just one out. Hartman escaped further damage by forcing 5-4-3 inning ending double play.

Clinging to a one run lead in the top of the seventh, Berks again found themselves in trouble as Gettysburg had runners on first and second with just one out. But Koenig induced a 6-4-3 twin killing to work out of the jam.

The Nittany Lions will hit the road for a non-conference doubleheader at Ramapo College on Sunday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
