Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second half deficit too much for men's basketball to overcome

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team mounted a furious comeback late in the second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Lancaster Bible College held on for a 113-103 win in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division opener on Wednesday evening at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions trailed by 10 points coming out of the halftime intermission before a scoring binge by LBC put the guests ahead 89-65 with 11:49 left in regulation. But Berks battled back with some strong takes to the basket by their wily, explosive guards for a 28-11 run that cut the Chargers lead to seven points with 3:57 to play. That is as close as the Nittany Lions would get as LBC went 3-of-3 from the floor and were 6-for-6 at the foul line down the stretch.

Baba Waples was the catalyst during the Nittany Lions comeback bid with acrobatic play after play that brought the packed house to its feet. Waples turned in a career-high 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor and going 9-for-12 at the line. Waples had one-on-one coverage at the top of the arc and would explode to the basket with cross-overs and between the legs dribbling through traffic that would end with an kiss off the glass and his body falling to the floor. At one point during the second half run, Waples tallied 15 of the Nittany Lions 21 points to pull back into the game.

Dameon Nixon had a season-high 21 points by using the same offensive plan as Waples, attack the hoop. The senior guard made eight baskets, six of which were layups in the paint. In addition, Nixon recorded seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Christian Burggraf finished the contest with 16 points, including five straight points that brought the game to 100-93. Nygel Belizaire matched his career-high with 13 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor, while Montrell Gilliam added 12 points and five boards.

Bryce Williams led LBC with 33 points (13-for-13 at the line), followed by Dondre Perry with 25 and Herbie Brown with 15.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in a NEAC South Division contest on Saturday, December 5 at 1 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
