Men's basketball drop heartbreaker to Albright

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team made a late push behind the strong play of Baba Waples and Montrell Gilliam down the stretch, but Albright College was able to finish on top in a 73-70 non-conference contest at Beaver Community Center on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions (0-2) trailed by as much as 14 points in the second half and were down by 12 with 11:35 to play in regulation. Waples and Gilliam would score 25 of the Nittany Lions final 33 points to help get Berks back into the game.

Gilliam drilled a 3-pointer with 2:29 left to even the game at 62-62, the first tie of the game since tip-off. Gilliam made a layup to cut the Albright lead to 70-66 and Nygel Belizaire grabbed the rebound off of a missed foul shot on the front end of a one-and-one. Dameon Nixon made it a two point game with a layup on the ensuing possession with 13 seconds remaining. After a Berks foul, Albright went to the line and made one of two shots on the double bonus to go ahead by three points with 10 seconds remaining. Gilliam had a layup rim out, but Nelson Hine grabbed the offensive rebound and got the put back to trail 71-70 with just over five seconds remaining. Albright got sent to the foul line and made both shots to build a 73-70 lead with 4.3 seconds on the clock. Waples picked up the rolling in bound pass just before midcourt, took a couple dribbles and tossed up a long three that came up just short of the net.

Waples continued his hot start to the season, finishing with a contest-high 24 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the floor. Gilliam was equally as impressive, going 7-of-9 from the floor for 15 points in 13 minutes in the second half. Gilliam was able to penetrate the Albright defense with his electric dribbling moves that led to four acrobatic layups in the paint. Michael Aldridge finished the game with seven points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three blocked shots. Belizaire finished with a team-high and career best 10 rebounds to go with his four points and two blocks.

Albright (1-2) received 21 points from Omari Ringgold and 20 points off the bench by Jayson Clark. Evan Ward tallied a double-double with 11 points and contest-high 14 boards.
