Men's basketball drops season opener to DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team dropped its 2015-16 opener, 85-70, to the MAC Freedom preseason favorite DeSales University in a non-conference contest on Saturday evening at Billera Hall.

The Nittany Lions (0-1) battled hard in the early going and took a 38-36 lead into the halftime intermission. Out of the break, both teams went on some big runs but neither team pulling away as the game was as close as 59-56 in the Bulldogs (1-0) favor with 9:35 left in regulation. DeSales then went on a 26-14 run to close out the game to earn the 15 point victory.

Berks had three players score in double figures, led by Baba Waples with 16, followed by Dameon Nixon with 11 and Michael Aldridge with 10. Joel Ellison chipped in nine points and Christian Burggraf added eight. Aldridge grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Nixon recorded three assists and three steals.

The Nittany Lions only got to the free throw line 11 times and converted on just six attempts for a 54.5 shooting percentage, while DeSales was 12-for-18 for a 66.7 clip.

Four of the five Bulldog starters scored in double figures, led by guard Kuity Stanger with 22 poionts and Aaron Burton with 19.

The Nittany Lions will host Albright College in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, November 18 at 7 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
