Men's soccer clinches playoff spot with win over Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team clinched a playoff berth with a 3-0 win over SUNY Cobleskill in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on the final day of the regular season on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (9-8-1, 7-5 NEAC) qualified for the conference postseason for the first time in program history. They made postseason play in the past, but that was when every team in the conference participated in the playoffs. Berks will enter as the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 seed Keuka College in the quarterfinal round.

Berks scored all three of its goals in the first half, beginning with Jon Mercier sending a liner into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season in the ninth minute. Marvens Labissiere headed in the second goal of the match off of a cross by Joe Budnovitch. T.J. Yurkovic, who also added his seventh goal of the year, finished off the scoring with a breakaway goal at the 19:38 mark of the first half.

Kyle Baker made two saves in the first half and Gerardo Sosa had two stops in the second half as the duo combined on the Nittany Lions third shutout of the season.

The Nittany Lions will square off with Keuka on Wednesday, November 4 in the quarterfinals. The winner will advance to the final four which will be hosted by conference winner Morrisville State College on Saturday and Sunday.
