Men's basketball holds off Bryn Athyn comeback

READING, PA (January 10, 2015) - Christian Burggraf and Baba Waples combined for 54 points and the Penn State Berks men's basketball team held off a comeback bid by Bryn Athyn to win the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest 75-73 on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (2-7, 2-2 NEAC) led 16-5 with 11:42 remaining in the opening half, but Bryn Athyn battled back and took a 31-30 lead into the intermission. Joel Ellison opened up the second half with a layup to put Berks ahead by one and they led by as many as eight points with 5:14 left to play. Bryn Athyn erased that deficit and evened the game at 66-66 with just 2:18 left to play in regulation.

Waples broke the tie with a layup at 1:26 and a pair of free throws by Michael Aldridge put the Nittany Lions up 72-66 with only 32 seconds to go. But Bryn pulled within two points with 13 seconds left and a late 3-pointer cut the Berks lead to one point, however there was only 1.4 seconds remaining on the clock.

Burggraf poured in a season-high 29 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. The junior guard also added four assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Waples enjoyed a career-day with 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the floor. Most importantly, Waples kept Bryn Athyn's leading scorer, Deion Boyer, in check all game, holding him to 11 points. He finished 3-of-20 from the floor and was just 1-for-13 from the foul line.

Ellison recorded the first double-double of his career with 10 points and a person-best 12 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Alvernia University for a non-conference contest on Monday, January 12 at 7 p.m.
