Mummau, Nittany Lions down King's

READING, PA (September 3, 2014) - Lizzie Mummau and Dana Sarcinello each recorded a goal and an assist to help guide the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over King's College in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening.

After suffering a disappointing 1-0 loss to Franklin & Marshall College this past Saturday, the Nittany Lions (1-1) received a strong push midway through the first half when Mummau put the offense on her shoulders.

In the 22nd minute, Chrissy Smith sent a pass through a group of defenders that led Mummau to a one-on-one with the Monarch (0-1-1) keeper. Mummau took a few touches and sent the ball past the keeper and into the far back corner of the net. Less than two minutes later, Mummau crossed a pass from the sideline that Sarcinello easily drove past the keeper for her first goal of the season.

In the second half, Jen Kessler nearly chipped in a goal from about 30-yards out, but the keeper was able to deflect the ball out in front of the net. Taylor Schwartz came crashing in and tapped the rebound into the wide open nearby corner to put Berks ahead 3-0 with 22 minutes to go in the contest.

The final goal of the match came when King's turned the ball over deep in its defensive zone. Sarcinello booted the loose ball over to Caitlin Deibler, who then sent a long line drive over the keepers head and just under the crossbar.

Lost in the strong offensive showing was the effort given by the defensive unit. Katie Warner, Emily Rumpf, Brennan Moyer, and Shelby Baker did not allow the Monarchs to get many good looks at the net. Savannah Cramer easily made the save on the only shot King's was able to get on net. Cramer and Zoe Fletcher combined for the first shutout of the season.

Berks outshot King's by a 19-7 margin and both teams managed four corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Cazenovia College for the NEAC opener on Saturday, September 6 at 1 p.m.
