Men's soccer overcomes deficit to earn draw with Abington

READING, PA (September 10, 2014) - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team scored two late goals to overcome an early deficit and were able to earn some points in the standings by pulling off a 2-2 draw with Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday evening.

Berks gave up a goal at 35:03 in the first half and just 25 seconds later Abington added another score to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The game stayed that way into halftime and for the bulk of the second half.

But Berks was finally able to get on the board thanks to the strong leg of Isaiah Danner. The sophomore defender sent a goal kick deep into the midfield and the ball took a favorable bounce over the defensive backs. Freshman T.J. Yurkovic took a few touches before unleashing a line drive into the near corner of the net and cutting the deficit to 2-1 in the 72nd minute. In the 87th minute, Joe Budnovitch sent a perfect pass through traffic that Anthony Kidron redirected the ball past the keeper into the near corner.

Berks dominated the overtime periods, but were unable to get the game winner. They outshot Abington in the extra minutes by a 5-0 margin, two of those shots going on goal. Kidron had a nice shot on goal in the first half, but Dan Saint-Pol was there to make the save. In the second overtime, Michael Peguero directed a header on target, but it was cleared out by an Abington defender at the goal line.

Berks goalkeeper Kyle Baker finished the contest with four saves and two defenders were also credited with saves, while Abington's Saint-Pol had two saves.

Abington held an 11-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but over the ensuing three periods Berks held a 9-7 edge.

The Nittany Lions will return to action with a NEAC contest at home against Lancaster Bible College on Monday, September 10 at 7 p.m.
