Nittany Lions split with Albright

READING, PA (April 22, 2014) - The Penn State Berks softball team defeated Albright College 3-0 and then dropped the second game, 7-4, to earn a split in the non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions scored all three of their runs in the first inning and that was all they would need as Casey Hafer was on top of her game. The junior right-hander allowed only two hits, both coming in the bottom of the fifth. Hafer set Albright down in order in five of the seven innings. She struck out three batters and allowed only one runner in scoring position.

Colleen Hoge led off the game with a double to left field and two batters later scored on a double to left by Hafer. Later in the inning, Megan Olsen single to center field to drive in Hafer and Julia Moscato.

Hoge finished the game 3-for-4, while Olsen and Jenna Heffner each went 2-for-3.

In the second game, Heffner had an infield RBI single to tie the game at 1-all in the top of the second. But Alvernia outscored the Nittany Lions 6-1 over next four innings to take control of the game. Hoge drove in two runs with the single in the top of the seventh, but that is as close as Berks would get.

The Nittany Lions will host the College of Saint Elizabeth in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. The softball team will join the baseball team in hosting a Pink Game fundraiser in support of breast cancer awareness.
