Nittany Lions split doubleheader with F&M

READING, PA (April 10, 2014) - The Penn State Berks softball team fell 4-2 in the opener before rallying for a 6-2 victory in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall College on Thursday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (13-5) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, which provided the winning margin and ended an eight-game win streak that the Diplomats (20-8) were riding.

In the bottom of the sixth, Rhianna Roulston had a one-out single and advanced from first to third on an infield single by Abby Staskiel. Colleen Hoge then hit a roller to the drawn in infield that the shortstop threw wide at home plate trying to get Roulston. Chelsea Bright scored Staskiel with a sacrifice fly to right field. Casey Hafer followed with an RBI single and the inning was capped off on with an RBI single by Megan Olsen.

Hafer forced three ground outs in the top of the seventh to secure the Nittany Lions win over F&M. The junior right-hander pitched three innings of two-hit relief without allowing any runs. Olsen pitched phenomenal in the first four innings, but left with the game tied at 2-all. She scattered four hits, allowing two runs - one earned - and striking out two.

Julia Moscato finished 3-for-4, while Roulston was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Roulston is 15-for-26 at the plate over the last eight games, raising her team-best batting average to .469.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple by Jenna Heffner that scored Olsen from first. The Diplomats followed with two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to go ahead 4-1. Heffner had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to two runs, but that is as close as the Nittany Lions would get to tying the game.

Staskiel tossed one her strongest games of the year, going all seven innings. She worked around nine hits to allow four runs, only two of which were earned.

The Nittany Lions will host Gallaudet University in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m.
