Nittany Lions sweep Lancaster Bible in conference opener

READING, PA (April 1, 2014) - The Penn State Berks softball team was finally able to get on the game field and they made the most of it in by defeating Lancaster Bible College, 4-2 and 26-0, in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Tuesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (8-4, 2-0 NEAC South), who had not played a game since March 22, shook off the rust after the opener. Rhianna Roulston went 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Colleen Hoge, Chelsea Bright, and Julia Moscato each collected two hits.

In the first inning, Hoge led off with a single and then stole second base. She moved up to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball with two-outs to build a 1-0 lead.

The Chargers evened the game at 1-all in the top of the fourth, but Berks countered with two in the bottom of the inning. Roulston collected an infield single and the throw went wild to score Missy Lamm from second base. Hoge drove in Roulston with an RBI single to center field.

Casey Hafer led off sixth with a single and eventually scored on a ground out by Abby Staskiel.

Hafer pitched tossed a complete-game, two-hitter and her 11 strikeouts finished one shy from matching her career-high. In the fourth inning, Hafer recorded the rare feat of striking out four batters in one inning, as one Charger reached base on a dropped third strike.

In the second game, Roulston continued her hot hitting by going 2-for-3 with two doubles, six RBI, and a run scored. Roulston had two bases clearing doubles in the second the inning. For the day, she finished 5-for-6 with seven RBI, and two runs scored.

Hafer matched a career-high with four hits, while her seven RBI were a personal-best. Hafer also recorded a double and scored two runs.

Jenna Heffner finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, four runs scored, and triple, while Hoge and Bright both collected two hits and four runs scored. Staskiel added two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored.

Lost in the offensive outburst was the strong pitching performance by Megan Olsen. The freshman right-hander allowed only two hits in the shutout effort. She also collected four strikeouts and did not walk any batters. Olsen allowed only base runner to reach third base and she retired the final eight batters in order.

The Nittany Lions will host Wilson College in a NEAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
