Softball opens up 2014 with a pair of wins

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 9, 2014) - The Penn State Berks softball team defeated Fitchburg State College in walk off fashion by a score of 4-3 in its season opener at the Fastpitch Dream Classics on Sunday morning. They followed that up with a 4-2 win over Cazenovia College later in the day.

Casey Hafer earned the win in the first game and Abby Staskiel got the win in game two.

Chelsea Bright made an impressive debut by smacking game-winning, walk off double in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Falcons (0-1). Jenna Heffner led off the inning with a double to set Berks up for game-winner. The pair both went 2-for-3, with Heffner recording two doubles and two RBI.

The Nittany Lions scored three-runs with two outs in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Kaylie Vrabel doubled and came around to score on an RBI single by Julia Moscato. Hafer followed with a double and scored with Moscata on a double by Heffner.

Fitchburg State scored a run in the second and third innings to jump out to a 2-0 advantage. After Berks went ahead in the fourth, the Falcons tied it with a run in the sixth. Hafer allowed a two-out single in the seventh, but recorded the final out to lead to Bright's heroics.

Hafer tossed a complete-game, six strikeout performance.

Against Cazenovia, the Nittany Lions four runs in the opening frame and held on to capture a 4-2 victory. Colleen Hoge and Vrabel each reached on errors to open the game. Moscato followed with an RBI single and stole second base. Vrabel and Moscato scored on a double by Heffner. Missy Lamm capped off the scoring with a single to center.

Staskiel gave a comple-game effort, striking out three and walking just one batter.

Heffner finished off her Nittany Lion debut going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a walk, and four RBI.

The Nittany Lions will return to action on Monday, March 10 with games against Albertus Magnus College (1:30 p.m.) and Rivier College (3:30 p.m.)
