Nittany Lions continue strong start to season

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 10, 2014) -  The Penn State Berks softball team earned two more victories at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic after defeating Albertus Magnus College, 5-0, on Monday morning and beating Rivier College by a score of 7-1.

Megan Olsen tossed a complete-game shutout in the opener and Casey Hafer tossed a complete-game with nine strikeouts in the nightcap.

Olsen, making her first collegiate start in the pitcher's circle, allowed only four hits and struck out three batters to pick up the win.

Colleen Hoge led off the fourth inning and was sacrificed to second by Chelsea Bright. Julia Moscato followed with a single to score Hoge and give Berks a 1-0 lead. In the following inning, Missy Lamm and Olsen singled to start the scoring threat. Rhianna Roulston singled home Lamm and the runners pulled off a double steal to move into scoring position. Hoge drove home Olsen and Roulston with a single. The final run of the inning came on an RBI fielder's choice by Jenna Heffner.

In the second game, Hafer improved to 2-0 after going the distance and striking out a season-high nine batters.

Roulston finished the contest 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Hafer added an RBI double, while Olsen went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.

The Nittany Lions will conclude their spring break trip with games against Emmanuel College (9:30 a.m.) and Bay Path College (11:30 a.m.).
