Major's career day leads to win over Gallaudet

READING, PA (February 4, 2014) - Darren Major exploded for 35 to lead the Penn State Berks men's basketball team to a crucial 72-62 victory over Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Tuesday night at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions snapped a five-game conference losing streak to move to 4-7 in the NEAC and trail Wells College (7-7) for the fifth and final playoff spot. Berks hold the tiebreak over Gallaudet University (4-7 NEAC) after sweeping the season series.

Major's 35 points are the second most in program-history, trailing Joe Askew's 41 against Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University) on January 16, 2007. The 16 field goals he made are the second most, with Askew the leader at 17 in a game. The sophomore guard was a very efficient .615 (16-of-26) from the field.

He tallied 25 of his points in the second half by going 11-of-16 from the floor. Major scored 15 of those points from the 10:23 mark of the second half until 1:46 left to help Berks build a comfortable double-digit lead.

J.C. Keaton scored all of his career-high seven points down the stretch of the second half. Tom Smith finished the game with 10 points and five rebounds. Nygel Belizaire had a team-high seven rebounds to go along with his career-best three blocked shots. Dameon Nixon handed out seven assists, while Joey Lewis added three.

Joshua McGriff led the Bison with 24 points, nine boards, and two blocked shots. McGriff had a vicious two-handed dunk at 12:15 and after a Berks miss, he added a layup to pull the game to 40-37 in Berks' favor. The Berks defensive toughened up and would only allow McGriff one point in the final 11-plus minutes of the game.

Ben Coleman connected on five 3-pointers to finish with 17 points, while Anton Jackson chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Cazenovia College for a NEAC contest on Friday, February 7 at 5 p.m.
