Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball comeback falls short against Abington

READING, PA (February 11, 2014) - It appeared as though Dameon Nixon's jumper with 0.8 seconds left on the clock was going to fall in as the game winner, but the ball rimmed in and then out and fell to the ground as the Penn State Berks men's basketball team suffered a 95-94 setback to Penn State Abington on Tuesday evening.

Nygel Belizaire made two huge defensive plays in the final minute to help keep Berks alive. Mike Marvin attacked the basket for a layup with 53 seconds, when Belizaire went up with him and blocked the shot off the glass and into the hands of Tom Smith. Abington grabbed a defensive rebound with 17 seconds to go, but Belizaire stole an errant pass at midcourt. This all led to Nixon's near game winner that brought the crowd to its feet.

The game was tied up 10 times and had eight lead changes. The biggest lead of the game was seven by Berks and six for Abington. The two teams shot lights out with Berks going 52.2% (36-69) from the floor, 52.4% (11-21) from 3, and 64.7% (11-17) from the free throw line, while Abington went 56.3% (36-64), 61.1 (11-18), and 63.2% (12-19).

Darren Major continued his offensive dominance with a 30 point performance. It is the second-most points he has scored in a game, trailing the 35 he scored last Tuesday against Gallaudet University. Major shot 12-of-21 from the floor and knocked down three 3-pointers.

Smith added 24 points, six rebounds, and three assists. He raised his career total to 1,244 points, which trails Adam Fusco by 40 points for the all-time scoring title.

J.C. Keaton added a spark off the bench with a career-high 11 pints. The sophomore guard went 4-for-4 from the floor, including three from long distance. Keaton also took a charge by Marvin midway through the second half.

Nixon chipped in nine points and handed out a career-high 12 assists. The 12 assists also set a single-game school record, surpassing DONTEZ REID's 10 against Keuka College on January 16, 2011.

Abington had five players score in double-figures, led by Max Alton with 18. Nisiar Smith and Marvin each tallied 16 points, while Marvin picked up 12 boards for a double-double. Avery Barnes had 14 points and 11 boards, while Devin Jones chipped in 12 points.

The men's and women's basketball teams hosted a Pink Game fundraiser with all proceeds going toward the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County. Donations were made at the door and during a halftime, half court shooting contest there was a combined $185.30 raised for the evening.

The Nittany Lions will host Wells College for an NEAC contest on Friday, February 14 at 6 p.m.
